…Perhaps what makes a person of principle is the consciousness of selfhood. That is, an individual who knows who he or she is, or who they could be. Perhaps what makes the very question so perpetual of whether I am a person of principle is the fact that the term “principle” is not as black and white as one would think. I could be completely shallow and categorize individuals as people who are of principle. For instance, I would define a principle person as one who is very much organized, who acts on behalf of what is right and what is wrong, and persistently prioritizes. There is always a lesson to be learned, a moral to every story, an apparent truth. It is all or nothing never “in between”.
These are people that say “no thank you” to a slice of pie only because there isn’t enough to go around the table. These are the people that strategically live their lives by a moral code of conduct.
The kind of men who live with their mothers ‘til at least 40, who routinely awake every morning to find it is no different from the last, nor will it be, and are content because they can predict and prepare for what they know. They are in control. Their lives could very much be narrated by an outsider. These men try to do what countless punk-rock songs encourage them to do, when it is way too late, that is, live their lives.

These are women, former cheerleaders, I might add, who marry their high school boyfriends (most likely football players) raise four children in the suburbs ( two boys two girls) in a home with a white picket fence surrounding it. These women vacuum in pearls, bake carrot cake, sell raffle tickets for their sons’ baseball team, try to look and smell pleasing, teach their children to say “yes ma’m” and, “no ma’m”, iron their husband’s white shirts, occasionally vacation to the gulf of Mexico, go to church on Sunday, sing about God, Brimstone and fire, and find time to watch Dr.Phil. After years of housekeeping and preaching, such a woman will turn to her husband, and he will say “hey darlin’, I remember when you could stop a clock”…
